The mission was well known for its religious celebrations. Not visible today are the colorful geometric designs that originally covered the exterior surface of the mission. Inside, however, are original paintings of religious symbols and architectural designs.\u00a0These outposts were established by<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"color: #0b0080; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Roman Catholic Church\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Catholic_Church\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Catholic<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Religious order\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Religious_order\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">religious orders<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to spread\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0b0080; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Christianity\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christianity\">Christianity<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">among the local\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Indigenous peoples of the Americas\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indigenous_peoples_of_the_Americas\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">natives<\/span><\/a>. These missions formed part of a colonization system that stretched across the Spanish Southwest in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. This is one of the 5 San Antonio missions, the Alamo is owned by the state of Texas and operated by the Daughters of the Revolution. The National Historical Park encompasses 4 of the missions.
