It is located 45\u00a0km southeast of <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Guadalajara, Jalisco\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guadalajara,_Jalisco\">Guadalajara, Jalisco<\/a>,<\/span> and is situated on the border between the <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"States of Mexico\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/States_of_Mexico\">states<\/a><\/span> of <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Jalisco\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jalisco\">Jalisco<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Michoac\u00e1n\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michoac%C3%A1n\">Michoac\u00e1n<\/a><\/span>, at 1,524 metres (5000\u00a0feet) above sea level. It is a shallow lake, with a mean depth of 4.5 metres (14.9\u00a0feet) and a maximum of 10.5 (34\u00a0feet). The lake is also a critical habitat for several species of migratory birds, such as the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"American white pelican\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_white_pelican\">American white pelican<\/a><\/span><\/span>, and home to thousands of indigenous plants and animals. It is also home to a large contingent of expats from Canada and the United States.
