Certain species of trees, such as the Western hemlock in the foreground, tolerate shade and remain small for years in the undergrowth waiting for an opening in the canopy to initiate rapid growth.

There is something contradictory about lifeguards. They represent authority and serious responsibility but also good times, youth and summer. There are long periods of idleness interspersed with action and occasionally crisis. The serious gaze of the lifeguard in the foreground is echoed by the people behind him, while the lifeguard on the chair faces the other way as she blows a warning on her fluorescent orange whistle.

At the high point of a hike that took us up about to about a 1000 foot elevation to an overlook of Bozeman, MT.
I feel like I finally got some good shots of the Tilt-A-Whirl last year at the fair. I like the combination of the magical lights, and the blue collar accoutrements. I like seeing some of the workings exposed (which is why I liked seeing Boris’ socks in the New Years photo!).
This is from my early days with my “Don-Lopp-modified-Sputnik.” We try to visit NYC every other year during the winter holidays. This is from a late-night visit to the NYC library. I spot metered around the scene. It’s quite dark there at night, with a little bit of ambient light from the traffic.

The giant statues of Paul Bunyan and his blue ox Babe must be among the most photographed tourist spots. It is a bit ironic to find this lumberjack in the middle of the tiny remnants of old-growth redwood forest when it was his profession that cut 97% of the redwood forest. Many visitors are impressed when Paul engages them in conversation, although this girl sitting on his foot seems more interested in the conversation on her cell phone. This open pit salmon bar-b-que was photographed at the 46th Annual Yurok Tribe Salmon Festival in Klamath, California. A lot of the discussion focused on the collapse of the salmon fishery, central to the social, cultural, spiritual and economic life of the Yurok Tribe. The salmon tasted great.

I am not a car buff but I am impressed by the huge amount of work enthusiasts invest in restoring old vehicles. The contrast between this 36 Chevy and the magnificent restored cars illustrates how much skill, time and money is required to transform a pile of junk into a winning car. Carnival rides light up the Puyallup Fair at night
I have my night exposures of carnival rides pretty well set, but this particular ride was running without the spotlights for most of the duration of the ride. It looked darker than usual, so I bumped the exposure. Taken with twin Hasselblad 500Cs, 50 mm lenses. Exposure could have been 16 seconds at f22.
The top part of the ride is swinging down, and looks to me like the pendulum on a clock. It intersects with Sinbad’s extended sword in the painted backdrop. It looks as though he’s hitting the pendulum with a loud KAZAM!
Golden larch in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, Washington
Mandy and I went on a backpacking trip into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in September 2007. Permit required, hard hiking, heavy pack, uncooperative weather. The whole point for me was photography, and by 3 days in I had taken 1 stereo pair in 35mm. Winds died down some on the 4th day and I went nuts with the picture taking. This area is known for its pristine lakes, granite peaks, and larch turning gold in the fall. It’s a stunningly beautiful place.
This was taken with my Sputnik, tuned up by Don Lopp. Thank you, Don! Please forgive any mounting errors — the focal lengths of the lenses are a little mismatched.
Matt has two images to share with us this round. The first is from Letchworth, New York and was created with Scala in his Sputnik at f/22. The second was created on Provia 100F in his Sputnik at f/22, but is from Albion Falls in Hamilton, Ontario.

Experience Music Project, Seattle Center
The EMP (Experience Music Project) is Seattle’s version of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Museum, at the Seattle Center. The building is designed by Frank Gehry. I’ve never been inside (it’s kinda pricey – I’d rather have a new camera filter) but the outside has given me a lot of photo ops. Remember waaaaay back in loop 19A, when Dave Casey had a photo of the “sculpture thingie by the EMP?” The shadow of that sculpture thingie can be seen in this shot.
